Session on the SHANTI Act and Its Implications for India’s Nuclear Energy Sector

World Energy Council (WEC) India successfully conducted a virtual session on “The SHANTI Act and Its Implications for India’s Nuclear Energy Sector” on 24 June 2026, bringing together stakeholders from across the energy sector for an insightful discussion on one of the most significant recent developments in India’s nuclear energy landscape.

The session featured Dr. Garima Sharma, Head – Safety, Security & Safeguards Division, Nuclear Control & Planning Wing (Department of Atomic Energy) and one of the key contributors to the SHANTI Act, as the distinguished speaker. Dr. Sharma provided a comprehensive overview of the legislation, highlighting its key provisions, objectives, and potential impact on India’s nuclear ecosystem. She also addressed a wide range of participant queries, offering valuable perspectives on the legal, regulatory, and industrial dimensions of the Act.

The session was enriched by the presence of Mr. Sandeep Naik, Executive Director (NTPC) & Executive Director, WEC India, and Mr. Arnada Prasad Samal, Chief Executive Officer, Nuclear Power Uttar Pradesh Limited (NPUNL), who shared their perspectives and helped set the context for the discussion.
The programme witnessed an overwhelming response, with approximately 400 participants from government, industry, academia, and the wider energy community joining the session. The active engagement and discussions reflected the growing interest in the role of nuclear energy in supporting India’s clean energy transition and long-term energy security goals.
