Gas Based Power in India, Vision towards 15% share of Natural Gas in Energy Mix by 2030

India’s Vision: 15% Natural Gas in the Energy Mix by 2030
Repositioning Gas-Based Power in a Decarbonising Energy Landscape
As India advances toward its clean energy goals, achieving a 15% share of natural gas in the energy mix by 2030 has become a national priority. In this context, World Energy Council India (WEC India), in collaboration with the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), convened a high-level stakeholder consultation on “Gas-Based Power in India.”
The session focused on the role of gas-based generation as a flexible and cleaner alternative to support Round-the-Clock (RTC) power and integrate with renewable energy and energy storage solutions.
Chaired by Ms. Sangeeta Kaushik, ED-WEC India, and Mr. Subhash Kumar, former CMD, ONGC, the session featured participation from key players including NTPC, Shell, ExxonMobil, British Petroleum (BP), Xcoal, and GAIL, and was supported by knowledge partner Deloitte.

Key discussion areas included:
• Gas-based power as a transition enabler in India’s net-zero journey
• Revival of stranded assets and reform needs in pricing & PPAs
• Synergy with RE and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
• Policy and regulatory frameworks to unlock commercial viability
A detailed report by WEC India on gas-based power in India, which shall also capture insights and recommendations from the consultation, will be published shortly.
